Ecole Veneto-Crétoise du XVIIe siècle
Virgin and Child One-board panel, not parqueted 74 x 57 cm (missing) A large number of paintings have been grouped around a remarkable work, preserved in the Kunsthistorische Museum in Vienna, depicting "The Prodigal Son in Charming Company". This group of paintings forms a coherent body of work by a Master working in Antwerp and Italy in the second third of the 16th century. The Master of the Prodigal Son is situated in the stylistic milieu of Roman mannerism, and is close to Pieter Aertsen, but also to painters such as Jan Massys or Frans Floris, while retaining elements of mannerism. This name was first proposed by Hulin de Loo in 1909. Famous for his collection of 17th and 18th century English pottery, Henry H. Weldon and his wife also collected Northern paintings, such as a Young Woman in an Interior by Jacobus Vrel in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
