Saint François de SALES (1567-1622) évêque de Genève, fondateur de l'ordre de la Visitation, auteur de l'Introduction à la vie dévote et du Traité de l'amour de Dieu.
L.A.S., Neci [Annecy] Feb. 2, 1603, to Antoine de LA PORTE, "superintendent to the affairs of Madame la Duchesse de Mercoeur" in Paris; 1 page in-4, address on verso with two small red wax seals (top slightly trimmed but not touching text); engraved portrait enclosed. About a project of purchase of the seigneury of Duingt, on the lake of Annecy, by the duchess of Mercoeur. [The princess Marie de Luxembourg (1562-1623) had married in 1575 Philippe-Emmanuel de Lorraine, duke of MERCOEUR (1558-1602), whose funeral oration François de Sales pronounced. After becoming a widow, the duchess devoted herself entirely to works of piety, multiplying donations to religious orders. ] He accompanies the letter of the Marquis de LULLIN, "by which he responds to several that he received from Madame on the subject of Duin [Duingt]. He has spoken a great deal about it and believes that he wishes to deal with it. I am not writing to Madame so much for the haste of the one who takes the letters, as principally because I am trying to write to her as soon as possible to God in anticipation of the first passage of money that we will be able to make to Lion, from which we are not a little in fear, Geneve being entirely closed to us as it is now, and the soldiers being spread out over all our borders"... The letter seems to be unpublished.
