Louis XI (1423-1483) Roi de France.
L.s., Tours 27 Jan. 1468 [1469], to Duke of MILAN [Galeazzo Maria SFORZA], "Illustrissimo principi fratri nostro carissimo D. Duci Mediolani"; countersigned "Albertus" [Albert MAGALOT]; 1 page in-4, address on back with seal with arms under paper; in Italian. Important letter about a possible alliance of the Duke of Savoy Philip II with Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy. He has received the Duke's letter warning him of the rumor that Philip seeks to spread that with the help of the Duke of Burgundy, and in due course, he will make war on the Duke of Milan. Louis XI does not believe him, especially as regards the help which, according to Philip, the Duke of Burgundy must give him, which Duke, by virtue of the clauses concluded lately at the time of the treaty of peace [at Péronne on 14 October 1468], has agreed not to be able to make or conclude any party against the allies of Louis XI, among whom he declared the Duke of Milan to be one of the principal. Louis XI did not believe, therefore, that the Duke of Burgundy could bring Philip any relief in money, and he thought that whatever Philip said would be resolved rather in words than in deeds. He sends a copy of the treaty of peace made with the said Lord Duke of Burgundy, by which treaty the Duke of Milan will see that, to observe its clauses, he can do nothing against His Lordship... "Ill[ustrissime] frater noster carissime salutem.
