These family portraits were painted on 20 December 1774, a few months after the remarriage of Louis Anne Alexandre de Biaudos, Marquis de Castéja, to Marie Joséphine du Pire d'Hinges. The portraits of the children born from this union are later. The marquis of Castéja was widower of Louise Charlotte du Pleurre who died in 1773 with whom he had two children Alexandrine and Timoléon. He was notably governor of Saint-Dizier. The portraits of Catherine-Louise and Alexandrine Aimée de Castéja, born from the marriage of the Marquis de Castéja and his second wife, are later. Marie-Thérèse du Pire, née d'Errembault de Dudzeele and Alexandre Ghilain baron du Pire d'Hinges are the new in-laws of the Marquis of Castéja. Stanislas de Biaudos, Count of Castéja was the brother of the Marquis. He was a military man. The portrait of Catherine de Castéja, born from the marriage of the Marquis de Castéja and his second wife, dates from 1776. Jean-François Durand came from a family of painters who worked mainly in Nancy. His brother was also a painter under the name of Jean-François the younger. Jean-François Durand the elder worked mainly as a portraitist. He was also a painter of religious subjects. One of his rare paintings went on sale on April 4, 2017 in Paris, Hôtel Drouot (Le lavement des pieds, canvas, dated 1751, no. 27, reproduced). Some of his works are kept in the Musée historique lorrain in Nancy. the series
