Antonio DAVID (Venise 1698-1750)
Portrait of James Francis Edward Stuart, known as The Old Pretender Portrait of Mary Clementine Sobieska, wife of James Francis Edward Stuart, Portrait of Charles Edward Stuart, known as The Young Pretender or Bonnie Prince Charlie Portrait of Prince Henry Benedict Stuart, Cardinal of York Four oval copperplates. 9.5 x 7.5 cm Provenance: Veerhoff Galleries, Washington. Our four portraits are those of the last Stuart pretenders to the thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland. A descendant of Queen Mary Stuart, James Francis Edward Stuart (1688-1766) was the son of the last legitimist king of England, James II, who was overthrown in 1688 in favour of William III of Orange. He was the head of the Jacobite movement to return the crown to him, bringing together his Catholic and Protestant supporters. Married to Marie-Clementine Sobieska (1702-1735), granddaughter of the Polish king John III Sobieski, he had two sons who were each in turn pretenders to the English throne. Charles Edward Stuart (1720-1788), although he was able to rally many supporters, lost the English war of succession in 1746. His brother Henry Benedict (1725-1807) took part in the 1746 war. In 1748 he was ordained a priest and then created Cardinal of Frascati. With him the direct branch died out. These last descendants of the Stuarts lived mainly in exile in Rome. Close to the popes, they are buried in St. Peter's Basilica. Of Venetian origin, established in Rome, the portraitist Antonio David (1698-1750), was above all the official painter of the Stuarts, working also for the families of their court and many princes of the Church.
