The Leuchtenberg Horses Set of nine oak panels, one board, not parqueted, in an original frame from the house of J. F. Radspieler in Munich. Dated and monogrammed and on the central panel: 1876. Center panel: 17.5 x 23.5 cm; side panels: 12.5 x 15.5 cm Provenance : - Commissioned from the artist by Nicholas de Beauharnais, 4th Duke of Leuchtenberg (1843-1891), for Stein Castle, Stein an der Traun, Germany; - Collection Eugene Maximilianovich Romanowsky (1847-1901) 5th Duke of Leuchtenberg, brother of the previous Duke of Leuchtenberg, Stein Castle, Germany; - Collection Georg Nikolaevich of Leuchtenberg (1872-1929), nephew of the former, Seeon-Seebruck, Germany; - Collection Dimitri Georgievich of Leuchtenberg (1898-1972), son of the former, Seeon-Seebruck, Germany, then Quebec. Description of scenes from left to right: 1. Lad holding Bountchouk, the Duke of Leuchtenberg's horse, by the bridle; 2. The family in a carriage pulled by Lida, Lantern, Witemwas and Columbina; 3. Two young women riding in an amazon on Mode and Cannonball, playing with a dog; 4. The Duke and Duchess riding with Gay Lad and Valorus; 5. The Duke and Duchess in a coupé drawn by Oumilny and Grom outside the gate of Stein Castle in Bavaria; 6. The Duke, the Duchess and a friend walking with Bountchouk, Mode and Lantern; 7. Langham jumping in front of the Duke, the Duchess and her family; 8. The Duke and Duchess in a carriage pulled by Vorion and Dobiak, accompanied by their son and the 3rd Duke; 9. The 3rd and 4th Duke of Leuchtenberg driving a coupé pulled by Nariadny. Joseph Andreas Weiss was a German artist who settled in St. Petersburg from 1839 to 1852 as a court painter to Maximilian of Beauharnais, the third Duke of Leuchtenberg (1817-1852). Duke Maximilian of Leuchtenberg was the second son of the French Prince Eugene of Beauharnais (1781-1824), Viceroy of Italy and Grand Duke of Frankfurt, and his wife Princess Augusta-Amelie of Bavaria (1788-1851), daughter of King Maximilian I of Bavaria (1756-1825) and Princess Wilhelmine of Hesse-Darmstadt (1765-1796). He was the grandson of Empress Josephine de Beauharnais (1763-1814) and her first husband Viscount Alexandre de Beauharnais (1760-1794). In 1839 he became the son-in-law of Tsar Nicholas I of Russia (1796-1855) by marrying Grand Duchess Marie Nikolaïevna of Russia (1819-1876). Weiss also worked for Nicholas I.
