École de FONTAINEBLEAU vers 1600 - Lot 52
École de FONTAINEBLEAU vers 1600 The Woman Between the Ages Canvas. Restorations. 81.5 x 106 cm The theme of the woman between the ages is a common one in the Commedia dell'Arte, which was imported to France by Catherine de Medici. The beautiful Donna Lucia accepts the wishes of the young Horace, to whom she shakes her little finger in agreement, while she hands the merchant Pantalone glasses to make him aware of his old age. This subject was depicted many times in engravings and paintings in the 16th century. Pierre Perret's engraving of 1579 and another anonymous engraving from the end of the 16th century seem to have served as models for the painted versions, which always use the same composition (Musée de Rennes, New York, Aix-en-Provence; see catalogue of the exhibition L'école de Fontainebleau, Paris, Grand Palais, 1972-1973, no. 247, reproduced). The precious gesture of the young girl's hands (particularly that of her right hand), the purity of the drawing of the faces, the décolleté and the dress that reveal the silhouette are characteristic of the French painting of the Fontainebleau School.
