Henri MARTIN (1860-1943) Young shepherdess by the sea Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. 74 x 69.5 cm Henri Martin was a Divisionist artist and a member of the Symbolist movement. He was a major mural decorator, receiving large public commissions (Capitole de Toulouse, Sorbonne amphitheater in Paris, Conseil d'État hall at the Palais-Royal in Paris...) as well as private ones. Our painting is preparatory to one of the canvases in the quadriptych painted by the artist for the Paris apartment of Dr. d'Herbécourt, 93, avenue de Wagram, Paris. This eminent physician, having met the art-nouveau painter and decorator Henri Bellery-Desfontaines (1867-1909) at the Hôpital de la Charité (now the Centre Universitaire des Saints-Pères), commissioned him to embellish his dining room. The commission included the creation of a mantelpiece and complete furniture, as well as woodwork and paintings, all of which are now housed in the Musée de l'Oise in Beauvais. Henri Rapin created the woodwork, as well as the stained-glass door, while Henri Martin was responsible for the four murals, "Paysage de bord de mer", "Les Fiancés", "Déjeuner champêtre" and "La traite de la chèvre". Our painting is a direct preparation for the latter. The dining room, with its wood panelling, paintings and furniture, was exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1911. In these four compositions, Henri Martin depicts the Golden Age, a central Symbolist theme already painted by his fellow Divisionists, Signac and Cross. For Martin, painter and poet, this Golden Age takes the form of fertile nature, rural life, family and love.
