Willem van NIEULANDT (Anvers 1584 - Amsterdam 1635/36) Shepherd and passers-by in front of a landscape with an equestrian statue Oak panel, two boards, not parqueted. Willem van Nieulandt trained in Rome, first in the studio of his uncle Willem Nieulandt from 1601 to 1603, then in the studio of Paulus Bril in 1604. In Rome he copied the ruins of ancient monuments, which are to be found in many of his landscapes throughout his career. He left Rome to return to his native city in 1607, and in 1629 moved to Amsterdam where he remained until his death.
