ANTHROPO-ZOOMORPHE MAMBILA (or MAMBILLA) WARE JAR - Lot 367
ANTHROPO-ZOOMORPHE MAMBILA (or MAMBILLA) WARE JAR Mambilla Plateau - Nigeria (southeast) - Cameroon (northwest) H. 20cm (missing) This rare anthropo-zoomorphic jar illustrates the ancestral tradition of terracotta vessel production in the Mambilla plateau region - the role of the animal world in the cults practiced in this cultural area is important. Man and animal merge into a single figure, embracing the curves of the jar. Certain members of the community "are reputed to possess the power to transform themselves into animals, sometimes to practice witchcraft, sometimes to fight it, or because this power is emblematic of important statuses" (Falgayrettes-Leveau, Animal, 2007, p. 262-263). The Mambila people are of Bantu origin. Two thousand years ago, they broke away from the main Bantu group to integrate the present-day regions.
