BARLA, Jean-Baptiste. Iconography of Orchids. Illustrated Fl - Lot 86
BARLA, Jean-Baptiste. Iconography of Orchids. Illustrated Flora of Nice and the Alpes-Maritimes. Nice, Imprimerie Caisson et Mignon, 1868. 1 vol., large quarto. [4]ff, 83pp, [1]f, 63pl. Contemporary green percaline half-leather binding, title and author’s name in gold lettering. The volume is illustrated with 63 lithographed and colored plates by Vincent Fossat. A major milestone in orchidology: this is the very first monograph in French devoted to orchids. This copy is enhanced by an autograph dedication from the author on the half-title page. (The name has been scratched out). Barla would go on to become director of the Natural History Museum of Nice. Although mycology was his primary focus, he nevertheless undertook the writing of this flora dedicated to the wild orchids of the Alpes-Maritimes. He enlisted the help of Vincent Fossat (1823–1893), his regular illustrator, who produced exceptional watercolors of meticulous accuracy. Scuffing at the corners and edges. Copy free of foxing.
