RECLUS, Élisée. Winter Towns of the Mediterranean and the Maritime Alps. Paris, L. Hachette et Cie, 1864. 1 vol. in-12. Blue percaline, ornamental blind-stamped border, title, author, and publisher gilded. This guide, in its first edition, describes Mediterranean coastal cities as attractive winter destinations, highlighting their geography, architecture, and cultural significance. A descriptive and historical guide containing 4 maps and a plan, illustrated with 38 vignettes drawn from life by Hubert-Clerget. Élisée Reclus was a French geographer and anarchist activist. A Communard and anarchist theorist, he was an educator and a prolific writer. A member of the First International, he joined the Jura Federation after Michel Bakunin’s expulsion. Along with Pierre Kropotkin and Jean Grave, he contributed to the newspaper *Le Révolté*. In October 1894, along with other professors who had resigned, he founded the *Université nouvelle* in Brussels. A pioneer of social geography, geopolitics, geohistory, environmentalism, and ecology, he was also a vegetarian, naturist, advocate of free love, and Esperantist.
