Vietnam, early 19th century, Nguyen dynasty, reign of Minh Mang (1820-1841), Two Hué blue porcelain bowls, on small ring heel, decorated with a dragon associated with the Emperor expressing power, nobility and prosperity, confronted by a Kỳ Lân symbolizing wisdom, pursuing the sacred flaming jewel above foaming waves, among clouds resuming the form of ruyi. Nhât "sun" mark on base. Chips on one, a chip on the other. Diam. 18.7 cm and 18.8 cm N.B. The dragon and kỳ Lân recall the need to reconcile authority and benevolence, in a common quest for harmony between opposing forces to maintain order and peace.
