MARTIROS SERGEEVITCH SARIAN (1880-1972) DIT SARYAN
Landscape Oil on canvas pasted on cardboard Signed lower right and dated 1933 35 x 27 cm MARTIROS SARIAN Martiros Sarian or Saryan was born in 1880 on the outskirts of Rostov-on-Don, Russia. He is considered the founder of modern Armenian painting. He studied at the Moscow Art School between 1897 and 1904 with Valentin Serov and Konstantin Korovine. Very influenced by Gauguin and Matisse, he took part in the Blue Rose group, a gathering of symbolist artists active in Moscow between 1906 and 1908, but also in numerous exhibitions. He makes many trips, notably to the land of his ancestors, Armenia from 1901, but also to the Ottoman Empire, Egypt, Iran.... He contributed to the foundation of the Armenian Artists Society and, from 1922, he settled in the Socialist Republic of Armenia. Between 1926 and 1928 he lived in Paris, but most of the works from this period disappeared in the fire on the ship that brought him back to the Soviet Union. A wise and shrewd man, he managed to avoid the Stalinist purges and received many decorations, including the Order of Lenin on three occasions. He died in 1972 in Yerevan, his house is now a museum. The painting that we present for sale illustrates the artist's painting well. By his subject matter first of all, the artist is inspired by nature and human beings. But also by his treatment of colour and light, For Louis Aragon, Saryan is "a painter of happiness", and as the light of Rome was once transmitted by painters like Poussin or Corot, "the light of Armenia reaches us" thanks to the artist. The latter conceives his art only through colour and light, drawing inspiration from the Armenian miniature and illumination arts. For him, colour is a real miracle: "Colour should sing. It should express the perception of the essence of life that resides in every human being.
