Joan MIRO (1893-1983) et Josep Llorens ARTIGAS (1892-1980)
Rare polychrome enamelled terracotta dish decorated with a fauna Signed Artigas Miro Around 1955 Diam: 50 cm JOAN MIRO ET LLORENS ARTIGAS It is in 1917 that Joan Miro met Llorens Artigas in Barcelona. The latter is one of the great masters of 20th century ceramics, and his name is often associated with major artists such as Dufy, Miro or Marquet. Thus in 1941, "a close collaboration began between us, in which I saw an unlimited field of possibilities. Without any prejudices of profession, Miró's fantasy had no limits and it was up to me as a technician to avoid the pitfalls that the freedom of his invention brought up at every moment," Artigas then explained. In this way, Miro learned how to model the clay, work it before coating it with colours and embellishing it with signs and then firing it... the hazards of firing represented "exciting surprises" for him. Together, they made enamelled terracotta vases (from 1941), anthropomorphic sculptures (from 1945), and more than two hundred enamel-painted plates (between 1945 and 1946). The exhibitions of their works are a resounding and worldwide success. Their most fertile period will be the years 1953 to 1972, when we can locate the dish we present for sale. 1953 is also the date on which Joan Gardy Artigas, son of Llorens comes to assist them. They made hundreds of sculptures, dishes, vases, plates, pebbles, eggs, reliefs...about which the potter likes to say that "one does not distinguish where the painter begins and where the ceramist ends".
