Georges MATHIEU (1921-2012)
Untitled, 1958 India ink and gouache on paper Signed and dated lower right "Mathieu 58" Label on the back of Gallery A and E Silbermann, New York. 68 x 49 cm GEORGES MATHIEU Born in 1921 into a family of bankers, Georges Mathieu is considered one of the founders of lyrical abstraction. After studying law, literature and philosophy, and a few years in the professorship, he turned to the Plastic Arts and painted his first oils in 1942. In 1946, he had his first exhibition in Paris at the Salon des moins de trente ans, and in 1950, he exhibited in the United States and Japan. From 1954, he created numerous paintings during performances in front of the public, and in 1956 he created "Tribute to poets from all over the world" at the Sarah Bernhardt Theatre in Paris. However, despite his attempts, he was unable to create works in public in the United States and was categorically refused by the authorities. 1963 marked the organisation of a retrospective exhibition at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. It is the beginning of an official consecration which leads him to multiple creations: 10 Francs coin, ceramics for the Sèvres factory, architecture, jewellery making. From 1980, he breaks with a certain classicism abandoning the central figure and develops his chromatic palette. Since his death in 2012, retrospectives have multiplied both internationally and in France, restoring Georges Mathieu to his rightful place in the pantheon of 20th century abstract artists.
