VALERIAN, IAN PIERUS.
HIEROGLYPHIC COMMENTS OR IMAGES OF THINGS... WHAT IN A VIVID PICTURE IS INGENIOUSLY DEPICTED AS THE STATE OF MANY ANCIENT THINGS... PLUS TWO BOOKS OF COELIUS CURIO. ROUND. Lyon, Barthélémy Honorat, 1576. 2 tomes en 1 vol. in folio. Basane brune XVIIe, spine ribbed, gilt title. First French edition in a translation by Gabriel Chappuys de Tours, dedicated to the Duke of Savoy. It is a true encyclopedia of symbols; the first book offers the hieroglyphic meanings of all animals: lions, ostriches, dolphins, pelicans, etc.... The second, more eclectic, deals with the physiognomy of humans, clothing, tools, trees, vegetables and fruit, navigation and ships on the Nile, weapons, stone, paper, etc... Illustrated with 271 curious wood carvings in the text. The Latin edition dates from 1556. Good copy entirely set in red ink, a scorched notebook. Restorations to the bits and the upper cap. Caillet, 18979.
