[BOOBY-NAVY] [JUMIEGES] Guestbook of the... - Lot 335 - Delon - Hoebanx
[BOOBY-NAVY] [JUMIEGES] Guestbook of the Abbey of Jumièges. France, 18861901 and 19081914 Dimensions: 210 x 280 mm. Jumièges is a peninsula in the Seine, between Rouen and Caudebec. Founded in the 7th century, the ruins still visible from the 9th to the 17th century earned it the title of "the most beautiful ruin in France". It was a high place to visit, as evidenced by the two registers known as the "Golden Book" with signatures and comments related to the visit. In 1824, M. Caumont inherited the abbey: he stopped the destruction, and now does his best to save what remains of the ruins. In 1854. Mr Eric Lepel-Cointet bought Jumièges, and carried out important consolidation work. Thus were discovered in the west wall of the storeroom, a curious type of XIIth century trilobal windows, a unique example in Normandy, and in the church of Saint-Pierre, two Xth century bays, which are the oldest part of the ruins. In 1828, the choir collapsed. The whole ensemble was cleared by M. Lepel-Cointel from 1855 to 1860. In the spring of 1908, the vaults of the first and second floor tribunes were rebuilt with the old materials. A visit to the abbey in 1924: "Come with us to the most magnificent monastery in Normandy, the Abbey of Jumièges, so famous for the science of its doctors, for the science of its great historian, Guillaume de Jumièges. Jumièges, - so named, some say, because the monks moaned all day, so named, others say, from the word Gemma, precious stone, because the abbey of Jumièges shone with the brilliance of diamonds, among the monasteries of the Christian world . The cars during this time turned back, on the small square of Jumièges. We cross the elegant gate of Mrs Lepel-Cointet's park and we drive back up to Saint-Wandrille which we will visit again before going to lunch in Caudebec" in Bulletin de la Société historique et archéologique de l'Orne [Wednesday 27 August 1924, visit of the historical and archaeological society of Orne]
