[MARSEILLAISE]. ROUGET DE LISLE (Joseph Claude)].... - Lot 270 - Delon - Hoebanx
[MARSEILLAISE]. ROUGET DE LISLE (Joseph Claude)]. Hymn of the Marseillois, composed by the Citizen Rongez [sic], captain of the Engineers, in garrison at Huningue. The tune was composed by the Citizen Allemand, for the Army of Biron. In Aurillac, from the printing house of Viallanes, father & son, printer of the department of Cantal, 1792 Bi-feuillet imprimé, 4 pp. Dimensions: 255 x 185 mm. Tear, without missing text, in the lower left corner. Rare Aurillac printing. Composed by the French officer Joseph Claude Rouget de Lisle in the night of 25-26 April 1792. He was asked by the mayor of Strasbourg, Baron de Dietrich, to compose a military song for the volunteers of the Army of the Rhine following the King's declaration of war on Austria. The initial title of the song was "Chant de guerre pour l'Armée du Rhin, dédié au Maréchal Lükner". As early as April 29, 1792, the National Guard sang it on the Place d'Armes in Strasbourg to welcome the volunteers from the Rhône-et-Loire. The "War Song for the Army of the Rhine" was adopted on June 21, 1792, in Marseilles, during a meeting of volunteers from Marseilles and Montpellier ready to join the army of the federates which was being formed in Paris. The song composed by Rouger de Lisle became the marching song of the Marseillais heading north to take part in the Tuileries insurrection on 10 August 1792. After several variations of title (Chant de guerre des armées aux frontières, Chant de ralliement des Marseillais, Marche ou Hymne des Marseillois), the Song takes its definitive name "La Marseillaise".
