Jan II BRUEGHEL (Anvers 1601-1678) et Hendrik van BALEN (Anv - Lot 55
Jan II BRUEGHEL (Anvers 1601-1678) et Hendrik van BALEN (Anvers 1575-1632) Christ the gardener Canvas. Signed lower right Breughel. F. ACCIDENTS 100 x 192 cm Provenance: Collection of the Duke of Gloucester according to a label on the reverse of the stretcher. This painting, the only one signed by the artist, illustrates the episode where the risen Christ appears to Magdalene. Mistaking him for a gardener, she begs him to return the body of Jesus that has disappeared from the tomb. Jesus replies: "Do not touch me" (Noli me tangere in Latin). In the background we can see the Holy Women in front of the empty tomb. Jan Brueghel the Younger takes advantage of the theme of Christ the gardener to paint plants, vegetables and birds, symbols of life and thus of Christ's recent resurrection. Jan Brueghel was mainly a painter of still lifes and landscapes and collaborated here with Hendrik van Balen. He treated this episode from the Bible on several occasions: the version closest to ours is in a German collection (panel, 59 x 88 cm, see Kl. Ertz, Jan Breughel D.J., Freren, 1984, n°152, reproduced pl. 30), where we find a similar treatment for the characters, the vegetation, and the birds. We can also mention the version in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (panel, 54 x 93 cm, see Kl. Ertz, no. 153), the version in an English collection (canvas, 54.5 x 83 cm, see Kl. Ertz, no. 154, reproduced on pl. 31), the version in the Kunsthalle in Bremen (panel, 60 x 100 cm, see Kl. Ertz, no. 155, reproduced on pl. 32), as well as the version in the Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco (panel, 57.5 x 92.5 cm, see Kl. Ertz, no. 156). We can place the work after his father's death in 1625, when he changed his signature from "Brueghel" to "Breughel".
