Peltro William TOMKINS (Londres 1759 - 1840) - Lot 124
Peltro William TOMKINS (Londres 1759 - 1840) Portrait of Frederike Sophia Wilhelmina of Prussia, Princess of Orange Portrait of Willem V, Prince of Orange, in profile Pair of drawings, black stone and red chalk, white and watercolour highlights One signed lower right Tomkins Titled and dated lower Princess of Orange 1746 (?),... /and J Downman and Prince of Orange 1746 (?) /J Downman 23,5 x 18,2 cm The Prince of Orange - Nassau Willem V (1748 - 1806), was the last Stathouder of the United Provinces from 1751 to 1795. He lived in exile in London from 1795 following the Patriots' revolution. In 1767 he married Wilhelmine (1751 - 1820), niece of Frederick of Prussia. His son became the first king of the Netherlands in 1815 under the name of Willem I. Our two portraits certainly date from 1796 and not 1746 as written. It would be a reworking of two lost portraits of John Downman, made by Tomkins with the intention to engrave them. The engraving was not made. We thank Mr Neil Jeffares for the attribution of this pair of drawings and the information in this notice.
