Indian miniature mounted as an album page with a portrait of - Lot 134
Indian miniature mounted as an album page with a portrait of Akbar Polychrome pigments and gold on paper India, circa 1600, Mughal period It depicts Akbar (1542-1605), the third Mughal emperor, who ruled from 1556 until his death in 1605. The ruler is dressed in gold, and is enthroned on the terrace of his palace surrounded by his court. Several women surround Akbar. One is addressing the ruler, while another is standing behind him, fanning him with a fan or chauri. Two deer are also depicted at his feet alongside a man carrying the ruler's sword in a silk sheath. Behind the beautiful and imposing architecture of the palace, one can see the luxuriant vegetation under a blue and golden sky. Mounted on a page of album powdered with gold. Page : 45 x 30 cm Miniature : 15 x 10 cm Provenance : Sale Boisgirard & Associés, 2004 Even if it is impossible to attribute these pages to a precise manuscript, many elements (the general organization of the scene, as well as many details such as those of the carpet decoration or the coffered ceiling) lead us to believe that these two miniatures were extracted from a historical work, produced between the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century. During this period, under the impetus of Akbar, copies of works such as the Zafarnameh, the Baburnameh, and of course the Akbarnameh were produced. These works constitute the accounts of the reigns of these great rulers (Tamerlan, Babur and Akbar), historical chronicles of their victories and conquests."
