Indian miniature mounted on an album page with a portrait of - Lot 135
Indian miniature mounted on an album page with a portrait of the young Jahangir Polychrome pigments and gold on paper India, circa 1600, Mughal period The emperor Jahangir (1569-1627), son of Akbar, ruled Mughal India from 1605 until his death. This miniature, probably from the same album as the previous page, depicts him seated on the terrace of his opulent palace, surrounded by young women, one of whom is bowing to him and offering him pearls. The sovereign is richly dressed, adorned with jewels, and wears a katar held at his waist by a gold-embroidered sash. Mounted on a gold-powdered album page. Page: 46 x 30 cm Miniature: 18.5 x 10.5 cm (small area of overpainting in the upper part of the image probably dating from the period when the page was mounted in an album) Although it is impossible to attribute these pages to a specific manuscript, many elements (the general organization of the scene, as well as many of the details such as those of the carpet decoration or the coffered ceiling) lead us to believe that both of these miniatures were taken from a historical work, produced between the end of the sixteenth and beginning of the seventeenth centuries. During this period, under the impetus of Akbar, copies of works such as the Zafarnameh, the Baburnameh, and of course the Akbarnameh were produced. These works constitute the accounts of the reigns of these great rulers (Tamerlan, Babur and Akbar), historical chronicles of their victories and conquests."
