École FRANÇAISE du XIXe siècle, d'après un modèle de Pierre - Lot 209
École FRANÇAISE du XIXe siècle, d'après un modèle de Pierre PUGET (1620-1694) Portrait in profile of King Louis XIV. White marble medallion. Minor wear and accidents. D : 62 cm In a moulded frame in imitation marble wood, D : 82 cm Related works : - Pierre Puget, Louis XIV, circa 1688, marble medallion, diam. 65 cm, Marseille, Musée des Beaux-Arts, Inv. S.1 - Pierre Puget, Louis XIV, marble medallion, diam. 65 cm, Versailles, Musée Lambinet; - Pierre Puget's workshop, Louis XIV, marble medallion, diam. 66 cm, Aix-en-Provence, Musée Granet, inv.701. This marble medallion presents a resemblance of Louis XIV, portrayed with no concessions as to the weight of the years, but with a haughty stance, his gaze fixed on the future, wearing a military armour, voluntary, serene and courageous. This work is a copy of one of the best-known works by the sculptor Pierre Puget, an artist of protean genius and torchbearer of the southern sculptors of the reign of Louis XIV. The Marseilles-based artist produced this portrait of the Sun King with its discreet naturalism and slightly heavier features shortly after his meeting with Louis XIV during a trip to Paris in 1688. This work was probably part of the ambitious overall project for the Place Royale in Marseille around the equestrian statue in homage to the monarch that occupied the sculptor in the late 1680s. A medium of political propaganda as much as an artistic gesture, this portrait of Louis XIV, the autograph version of which is preserved in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Marseille (inv.S1), was distributed through the work of the artist's studio in the south of France from the end of the 17th century. Our medallion is a later copy, testifying to the prestige of the model and the artist.
