Portraits of great men, illustrious women, and memorable subjects of France, engraved and printed in colors. Dedicated to the king. Paris, Pierre Blin, [1786-1792]. 2 vol. in-folio. Full porphyry calf, ornate spine, lemon morocco title and gilt edges. First edition complete with the engraved title in bistre, the engraved dedication leaf as well as the 192 plates printed in colors (including 96 portraits), almost all drawn by Sergent and engraved in intaglio by Sergent, Mme de Cernel, Ridé, Morret, Roger... This collection appeared in 48 issues of 4 plates. Plates bound in the disorder. Copy offered to the actress Sarah Bernhardt. With a handwritten note : "Exemplaire de Sarah Bernhardt. It was offered to her by her staff". It is accompanied by a folio on vellum skin in-folio bearing a handwritten dedication adorned with theatrical symbols drawn in watercolor: "À Madame Sarah Bernhardt Souvenir offert par l'Administration, les Artistes et le Personnel 1er janvier 1907." The dedication is followed by the signatures of those involved in the present. Attached: the front cover of the 14th issue containing the printed prospectus on the verso; a 19th-century print depicting the profile of Sergeant Marceau.
