[AEROSTATION]. [SURCOUF (Edouard)]. Autograph... - Lot 281 - Delon - Hoebanx
[AEROSTATION]. [SURCOUF (Edouard)]. Autograph letters and cards signed by Edouard Surcouf (1862-1938), aeronaut, engineer and industrialist. Including: - Nine handwritten letters in all (dated 1901-1906), addressed to "His dear friend" or "Dear Comrade". - Three typescript letters signed Edouard Surcouf, addressed to A. Laisant [probably Charles-Ange Laisant, mathematician and politician]. - Two typescript letters from Edouard Surcouf on headed paper, one from the "Grands ateliers aérostatiques du Champ-de-Mars" (s.d.), the other from the "Compagnie générale Transaérienne" (1911). - A typed letter from Georges Besançon (dated 1899) mentioning the transfer of the Central State of Aerostation, now united under the name "Grands ateliers aérostatiques du Champ-de-Mars". Louis Godard founded in 1899 in Saint-Ouen the "Grands ateliers aérostatiques de Paris": the same year, Edouard Surcouf took over the company under the name of "Ateliers aéronautiques Édouard Surcouf". The present letters talk a lot about the balloon "Deutsch" which kept Edouard Surcouf busy. In 1904, the industrialist Henry Deutsch de la Meurthe ordered an airship from Surcouf, which was powered by a German Argus engine and which had a serious accident during its inaugural flight, in December 1904. The "Deutsch" balloon was rebuilt and the "Ville de Paris II" flew successfully in 1906. On November 20, 1907, piloted by Henry Kapférer, commanded by Louis Blériot, it broke a record by making an ascent of one hour and forty-five minutes. JOINT: [MANUSCRIT]. PILLET. Aerial navigation. The aerodopore. Essay on air navigation. Aerodopore or New Apparatus for Travelling in the Air. Signed "for copy" Cherbourg, August 15, 1878 [Pillet], unbound, waiting cover, 16 pp.
