René BUTHAUD (1886-1986) - Lot 210
René BUTHAUD (1886-1986) Piriform vase with overflowing neck in enamelled ceramic with geometrical decoration known as " snake skin " ivory and beige. Signed J. DORIS under the base. About 1935. BIBLIOGRAPHY : P. Cruège, René Buthaud, Les Editions de l'Amateur, Paris, 1996, for many similar examples. In 1934, René BUTHAUD is solicited by an American dealer named Salmicouri to market his pieces in the USA. But he is constrained by an exclusive contract with the Rouard Gallery since 1928 which forbids him to sell his pieces. He then found an agreement to create and sell his production in the USA on the condition that he signed with a different name. He chose the pseudonym of J. DORIS, inspired by the name DOURIS, famous painter of Greek vases of the 5th century. Height : 32.5 cm. (Some small enamel damages).
