[BYZANCE] COMNENA, Anna. Annae Comnenae Porphyrogenitae Caesarissae Alexias, sive de rebus ab Alexio Imperatore vel eius tempore gestis, libri quindecim. E Bibliotheca Barberina nunc primum editi (...) Paris, E. Typographia Regia [Colophon: Curante Sebastiano Cramoisy], 1651. 1 vol. Black granite calf, spine with pink paper title-piece. [14]ff, 507pp, [19]pp Glossarium, [5]ff Notes, [11]ff index. Armorial title vignette, headpieces and footnotes. Original edition divided into 15 books. Greek and Latin printing on two columns. An essential source on this period of Byzantine history: Anna Comnena, daughter of Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, describes the political and military history of the Byzantine Empire during the reign of her father, thus providing a significant account of early medieval Byzantium. Anna Comnena was considered an eminent historian by her contemporaries and later generations. It was written in the last years of her eventful life, during her confinement in a monastery, and completed around 1148. This edition contains the first Latin translation by Pierre Poussines and Charles de Monthal. Following the text, there is a preface and notes by David Hoeschel. Library stamp: Ex Bibl. Com. F. Széchényi and Masodlat a M. N. Muzeumi Széch. Orsz. Könyvtárból". Clumsy restorations to the two boxes at the head and tail, to a corner and to the first board. Angular staining at the bottom of the first few leaves which returns at the end.
