First French edition in a translation by Gabriel Chappuys de Tours, dedicated to the Duke of Savoy. It is a true explanatory encyclopedia of symbols; the first book offers the hieroglyphic meanings of all animals: lions, ostriches, dolphins, pelicans, etc... The second, more eclectic, deals with the physiognomy of humans, clothing, tools, trees, vegetables and fruits, navigation and ships on the Nile, weapons, stone, paper, etc... Illustrated with 271 beautiful woodcuts in the text. The Latin edition dates from 1556. A good copy entirely ruled in red ink, one booklet foxed. Restorations to the spines and to the upper cover.
