Ostriches have been hunted for their feathers since ancient times, mainly in the Kordofan and Dar Four regions. Caravans from the upper Nile valley brought ostrich feathers to Egypt, where, in the 15th and 16th centuries, the fashion for plumes and feathers in toques, hats and tournament headdresses was in full swing.
Representations of ostrich hunting became fashionable in the 18th century with turqueries and chinoiseries.
One of the most famous of these is the painting by Carle van Loo to decorate the Petite Galerie des Petits Appartements of King Louis XV at the Château de Versailles, now in the Musée d'Amiens.
