China, Guangxu period, 19th century, Blue silk mandarin robe with polychrome and gold thread embroidery of nine five-clawed dragons chasing the sacred jewel, moving above foaming waves among stylized clouds from which emerge rocky peaks, coral branches, swastikas, bats and Buddhist emblems, including the endless knot evoking intertwined wisdom and compassion, the fish symbolizing freedom, and the treasure vase signifying spiritual wealth and longevity. The collar is adorned with five small dragons with five claws. Sleeves cut off, hem on lower part of dress, wear, threads pulled. L. 144 cm; H. 107 cm
