Accompanied by a letter from Mr. Andrew Wilton, 2001
We would like to thank Mr. Andrew Wilton who, in a letter dated March 2, 2001, kindly gave the current owner his opinion on the painting: "As a result of our extensive examination of your painting at the Tate, My colleagues Andrew Wilton and Ian Warrell and myself reached the conclusion that we cannot accept the picture in its totality as the work of J.M.W.Turner. The picture does, however, seem to show evidence of having been painted in two stages, possibly at different times and involving different hands. There is therefore the possibility that it may have been an unfinished canvas originating in Turner's studio, subsequently completed by another hand, perhaps during the prolonged lawsuit that followed his death when it is possible that some works escaped. Turner's involvement cannot be ruled out, but the final composition, as visible today, is not in our view his work /... "
