LA FONTAINE. Contes. Color facsimile of the manuscript once - Lot 38
LA FONTAINE. Contes. Color facsimile of the manuscript once owned by Béraldi and Eugène Paillet. [Jacomet, 1934 - 1938]. 2 vols. large in-4. Pastiche binding in full red calf, lace decoration, ornate ribbed spine, gilt title and tomaison, gilt edges, pink silk endpapers [GRUEL]. Rare and impressive facsimile reprint of the Contes de La Fontaine, initiated by the Petit Palais and Béraldi when he acquired the original text and drawings by Fragonard. Edition of 200 copies on Arches. Fragonard composed these 57 washes around 1770, probably for a patron, with a view to an illustrated edition. Only the first volume was published in 1795 by Didot, and only 22 compositions were engraved. Impressive pastiche bindings signed by Gruel. Scratch to one cover, spine slightly faded, brittleness and rubbing to spine ends.
