MASSENA, André, Marshal of the Empire, Duke of Rivoli, Prince of Essling, born in Nice on May 6, 1758 (then in the County of Nice, Kingdom of Sardinia) and died in Paris on April 4, 1817. A collection consisting of a handwritten document from the Army of Italy and seven books or pamphlets dedicated to Masséna. - A two-page handwritten document in oblong in-4 format, bearing the autograph signatures of Masséna, Dupuy, La Harpe, and Bertaud. On the letterhead of the 21st Half-Brigade of the New Formation. Leave granted to Citizen Jean Baptiste Labroué, lieutenant of the Grenadiers, who found himself supernumerary following the reorganization of the Army, to travel to Toulouse, Haute-Garonne. Dated 4 Germinal, Year 4 of the Republic. Includes Lieutenant Labroué’s service record. Masséna signed in the margin beneath the notation “approved by me, General of the Guard, Commander of the Vanguard of the Army of Italy.” The document also bears the signatures of members of the 21st Brigade as a token of sympathy for the lieutenant. Red wax seal on the document (crumbling). Document preserved folded into quarters, with fragile, dusty folds. - Enclosed: MASSÉNA, Marshal. Memoir by Marshal Masséna, Duke of Rivoli, Prince of Essling, on the events that took place in Provence during the months of March and April 1815; followed by supporting documents and a map. Paris, Delaunay, 1816; 8vo, paperback, (4) – 89 pp. 1 fold-out map; period pink paper half-cover, handwritten title (paper missing from the spine, untrimmed copy). First edition. Included is another copy of the same work, bound: Memoir by Marshal Masséna, Duke of Rivoli, Prince of Essling, on the events that took place in Provence during the months of March and April 1815; followed by supporting documents and a map. Paris, Delaunay, 1816; 8vo, paperback, (4) – 89 pp. and 1 fold-out map; contemporary light brown half-basane binding, smooth spine decorated with gold fillet work, title gilded on an olive morocco label. Coat-of-arms bookplate on the half-title page (two handwritten annotations from the period in ink within the text and one crossed-out printed note; binding browned at the bottom of the spine).
