PIERRE MILLIERE (SAINT JEAN DE LOSNE 1811 - CANNES 1887)
Album containing about three hundred drawings: Souvenirs, Impressions of Travels (views of Savoy, the French Riviera, Italy ..., between 1862 and 1880) Black pencil, watercolor Some monogrammed at the bottom P M Some located and dated 32.5 x 51 cm Pierre Millière is considered one of the greatest French entomologists. He never practised his profession as a pharmacist, preferring to set up as a hardware dealer with an associate. He became interested, initially as a hobby, in the study of lepidoptera and, thanks to the quality of his work, became a member of many French and foreign learned societies. The death of his associate having freed him from material constraints, he devoted himself entirely to his studies. From 1870, he settled permanently in Cannes, passionate about the entomological fauna of this region. Between 1859 and 1874, he published in Paris, in thirty - five parts, his main work Iconography and Description of Unpublished Caterpillars and Lepidoptera, most of whose descriptions are still considered valid. His collections of lepidoptera are kept in the Palais Coburg in Vienna and in the Museum of Natural History in Paris.
