Contemporary fawn calf, boards decorated with a fleur-de-lys pattern in a double dotted fillet, gilt border, gilt arms in the centre of the boards, spine gilt, edges gilt. 8]ff, 756pp, [1]f errata, [23]ff index. Latin and Greek printing translated and commented by Johannes Benedictus. This is one of the most important early seventeenth-century editions of Pindar. "The text is that of Schmid's edition (1616), with some corrections, but the Latin version is redone and accompanied by a good commentary." (Brunet, IV, 659). Johannes Benedictus, or Jean Benoist, was a German scholar and physician, professor of Greek to the king at Saumur. Note dated September 11, 1648, relating to a prize or work of Pindar awarded to a young "Michel" (adolescentem Michaelem) by the Jesuit College Sainte-Marie de Bourges. Incipit, "Ego infra scriptus Collegii Biturcensis Beatae Mariae Societatis Jesu...", bearing the signature Giffard. The stamp has been removed. Copy with the arms of the Grand Condé. Louis II de Bourbon, prince of Condé, Enghien, Châteauroux, Montmorency, Bellegarde and Fronsac was the first prince of blood. The Great Conde had formed a library in Paris consisting of about 10,000 volumes. This collection passed to his son Henri-Jules who enriched it considerably, but on his death (1709) it was completely dispersed. O.H.R. pl. 2624, n°1. Missing the three leaves IIiii 2, 3 and 4 of the index. Three leaves inverted. Scattered spotting in the text, heavy spotting on the boards, traces of mould on the spine, rubbing at the corners and the edges.
