Size : 245 x 310 mm "The conquest of Saigon in 1859 by Admiral Rigault de Genouilly and the ensuing extension of French influence in Indochina and
Cambodia constituted the first colonial success of the Second Empire. To commemorate this achievement, the admiral, who had become Minister of the Navy, presented Empress Eugenie in 1867 with a lavishly bound album of photographs entitled
Cochinchina and Cambodia, which is now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The photographs were taken by Gsell, a Frenchman stationed in Saigon, about whom nothing is yet known except that in June 1866 he accompanied Captain Doudart de Lagrée on a scientific mission along the Mekong.
