Jean-Louis VERGER (1826-1857) priest and... - Lot 77 - Delon - Hoebanx
Jean-Louis VERGER (1826-1857) priest and assassin; opposed to the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, he murdered Mgr Sibour, archbishop of Paris, and was guillotined. Autograph manuscript, 3rd Sunday of Lent; 17 pages and a half in-fol. Rare manuscript of a sermon by this priest thief and murderer. This sermon, according to St. Luke (XI, 14), comments on this miracle: "Jesus drove out a demon that was mute - and when he had driven out the demon the mute spoke, and the people were in admiration"... Verger concludes: "Let us enter into ourselves; and having examined by how many ways the dumb demon takes possession of us, let us consider with attention how important it is for us to shake off his shameful yoke; and arming ourselves against him with a holy resolution, let us repair in the future by the fervor of our prayers, by the sincerity of our confessions, by the courage of our animadversions, by the abundance of our instruction, all the failures to which his perfidious suggestions have led us. Attached is the autograph outline of this sermon (3 1/2 p. in-12 in pencil); and a note by Viscount Alphonse de La Guère (1846-1899) on the origin of this manuscript, which was given to him by Abbot Budan, parish priest of Annet (Seine-et-Marne), in 1882.
