MANUSCRIT]. Collection of extracts from... - Lot 84 - Delon - Hoebanx
MANUSCRIT]. Collection of extracts from authors relating to themes or concepts, classified alphabetically. In Latin, with some passages in Greek, manuscript on paper France, 17th c. 420 ff., preceded by one leaf and followed by 2 ff. of paper endpapers + 414 ff, preceded by one leaf and followed by 2 ff. of paper endpapers, non-foliated works, cursive writing in brown ink, some passages copied in pale red ink. Bound in havana morocco with repeated decoration, gilt decoration, boards decorated with a paving of alternating horizontal and vertical stripes, smooth spines decorated in the same way, three repeated dots on the edges, gilt edges (some rubbing, dull corners, fragile jaws). Dimensions of the bindings: 160 x 215 mm The repeated decoration of this binding is close to the one made on a Breviarium romanum (Paris, 1617) [Christie's, Collection Michel Wittock, 2nd part, decorated bindings, no. 59; the notice refers to another binding on a text by Jacques Cassan, Panegyrique ou discours 1617 (Miribel sale, Paris 4 June 1993, lot 22)]. In the same spirit of binding with repetitive decoration, we can mention a Psalterium Davidis (Paris, 1605) with a geometrical decoration with striated triangles and rhombuses (see Bibliothèque Henri Beraldi, Première partie. Livres anciens des XVIe et XVIIe siècles, Paris, 1934, no. 61, see reproduced plate). Rare bindings with repeating decoration. This manuscript contains extracts from authors organized thematically and alphabetically. The first article begins with "Amicitia," followed by "Avaritia," "Aedificatio," "Amor," and so on, with the last theme "Vita." Following, at the end of volume 2, there are other extracts from various texts, a long extract from Seneca. Provenance: Inscription on the upper back cover: Lefebvre de St Benoist. - In pencil, inscription: Count Alphonse de la Guère.
