Full contemporary calf, gilt arms in the centre of the boards, triple gilt fillet in the frame, spine with ornamented nerves, gilt title. 12]ff, 391pp, [7]ff ; [4]ff, 186pp, [1]f. Original edition which only appeared after the author's death. The work, which predates the treatise on the Law of War and Peace (1625), is one of the major pieces of the important Grotian corpus. Handwritten note on the lower front cover: "very rare edition". Copy of Jacques-Auguste de Thou. Handwritten bookplate "Cte Alphonse de la Guère", inscribed on the upper counterfoil. Two other bookplates partly erased on the title page including Ex-libris Ludovici Fuet... O.H.R. pl. 216, n°1. Cracks in the spines, missing headpieces, rubbed nerves and corners.
