Portrait of a Sinhalese man and a Sinhalese woman. Sri-Lanka, ca. 1875. With a bull Dim.: 10 x 14 cm The man has two combs in his hair "Traditionally, Sinhalese men wore their hair long and tied in a bun called a "konde", but Western influence led to the adoption of shorter hairstyles. This man has two combs of different styles in his hair. These combs were usually made of horn or tortoise shell and often had intricate designs. They were a common feature of gentlemen's attire in 19th century Kandyan society, the combs indicated superior status, signifying the fact that their family never carried a burden on their head."
