View of South Bridge Road in the early 1870s: one can see the Hindu Sri Mariamman temple built in 1827 and the Masjid Jamae Mosque, completed in 1835.
In the exercise of her rescue duties, she stands on a cloud, dressed in a red robe and accompanied by two assistants:
Qian li yan7 "eyes [that see a] thousand lilies" and Shun feng er "ears [that hear sounds] brought by the wind". In temples, his statue is most often that of a black-faced woman dressed as an empress.
The first emperor to officially recognize her power was Huizong of the Song, following the testimony of an embassy sent to the Korean kingdom of Koguryo. The fleet having met a storm, some would have seen a woman dressed in red coming to their aid.
The emperor offered to his temple an inscription in the form of an ex-voto "timely rescue".
