Founded in 767 by the Buddhist monk Shō.dō Shōnin, a mountain ascetic and propagator of the Buddha's teaching. The sacred perimeter of the Futarasan Shrine includes a historic symbol of Nikkō: the Shinkyō, a lacquered wooden bridge spanning the Daiya River. During the Edo period, its crossing was reserved for the shogun and imperial court messengers. In 1902, a flood of the Daiya river caused a flood which destroyed the Shinkyō. The bridge was rebuilt in 1904.
