Three first print albumen prints The Niomon 215 x 270 mm The Nio Guardians, or Kongōrikishi, Nikkō Tōshō-gū, Nikko, 1873 276 x 220 mm Statues at the First Entrance to Yomei-mon 278 x 219 mm The name Kongōrikishi was passed down from the image of the Greek hero Heracles through East Asia along the Silk Road. Heracles was used in Greco-Buddhist art to represent Vajrapani, the protector of Buddha, and his depiction was later followed in China and Japan to represent the protective gods of Buddhist temples. This transmission is only a small part of the Greco-Buddhist influence, a syncretic phenomenon, where Buddhism interacts with the Hellenistic culture of Central Asia from the 4th century BC until the 4th century AD.
