Renowned for his bold treatment of light and color, Victor Charreton (1864-1936) is a major figure of French Post-Impressionism. Co-founder of the Murols school, he made this Auvergne commune a hotbed of landscape creation at the turn of the 20th century. His work is distinguished by a free style, generous subject matter and a rare sensitivity to seasonal atmospheres. Our painting illustrates his attraction to winter landscapes, capturing with intensity the diffuse light and chromatic contrasts of the cold. A member of the Société des Artistes Français, Charreton exhibited regularly at the Paris Salons and won numerous awards. Today, his works can be found in a number of French museums, including Bourgoin-Jallieu, which holds the artist's most important public collection.
