This work will be recorded in the catalog raisonné being prepared by Micheline Phankim, Rainer Michael Mason and Franck Leibovici under number HM5891. From the mid-50s onwards, Indian ink became Michaux's preferred material, and he continued to use it throughout the next 20 years or so. He experimented with stains, their movement and the struggle against their disorder. On the white sheet, it's a battle, a succession of decisions, a strategy and an organization of movements: crowds, raging hordes, fighting empires, confrontations, battlefields, always bringing into play the multitude of inner fermentations. These "ink paintings" were first exhibited in 1954 at the Galerie René Drouin.
