STATUTES OF THE COMMUNITY OF VISAN (VAUCLUSE). S.l. [Visan], s.n., 1685, manuscript in ink on paper, in-4, paperback.
18 pp.n.ch.
Interesting fragment of a manuscript containing 102 articles, part of the statutes governing community life in the small village of Visan, in the Vaucluse region.
It summarizes the main activities of a French village at the end of the 17th century: convocation of the council "at the sound of the bell", salaries of deputies on horseback for Avignon and Carpentras, election of auditors, taxation, livestock census, police, butchers forbidden to buy dead or sick animals without the authorization of the "maître des vituailles", regulations for bakers and millers, regulations for bakers and millers, prohibition of wool washing "from the Pont dudit Béal on the Chemin de Bouschet upwards", right-of-way easements, building rights, neighborhood regulations, fines for "filth" thrown out of windows, roads, regulations for sewers, manure, prohibition of washing or throwing filth into fountains, watering, etc.
The manuscript breaks off at the end of article 102, at the bottom of the last page; although the text of this article is complete, there must have been a sequel, as indicated by the phrase "of which hereafter" at the end of the paragraph.
Very legible and well preserved document.
