[CIRCUS - KOBELKOFF]. AUTOGRAPH LETTER (?) SIGNED FROM NICOL - Lot 245
[CIRCUS - KOBELKOFF]. AUTOGRAPH LETTER (?) SIGNED FROM NICOLAÏ KOBELKOFF TO THE MAYOR OF ROUEN. Douai, May 29, 1902, in-4, 1 p. on graph paper, . Nikolaï Vasilievitch Kobelkoff (1851-1933) was born in Siberia without legs or arms. Of his four limbs, all he had was a stump about twenty centimeters long, which he used with dexterity (it's even said that he could lift a man with it). Nicknamed the "Trunk Man", he was exhibited as an attraction all over Europe at funfairs and princely courts. He was the inspiration for Todd Browning's film Freaks. In this letter, he asks the mayor of Rouen for permission to set up his fairground for the Saint-Romain fair on October 23, 1902.
