Red half-chagrin with corner pieces, double gold fillet on the covers, large gold title decorated with fleurons, gold publisher’s name, ribbed spine, gold title, gilt edges, pages mounted on tabs. 50 photographs printed on albumen paper and mounted on both sides of large cardboard sheets. Title at the top: “Mediterranean Coast,” caption at the bottom, photograph number at the bottom left, and signature “ND Phot.” Breakdown of photographs: 1 Grasse, 4 Cannes, 1 Antibes, 18 Nice, 3 Surroundings of Nice, 1 Villefranche, 2 Beaulieu-sur-Mer, 1 From Nice to Monaco, 1 La Turbie, 3 Principality of Monaco, 11 Monte Carlo (including 10 of the Casino), Corniche Road from Monaco to Menton, 3 Menton. The Neurdein studio was founded in 1864 by Etienne Neurdein, son of the photographer Charlet, and was soon joined by his brother Antonin. A classic Parisian studio offering photo sessions and historical portraits sold in visiting-card format, the firm’s activities shifted in the 1870s toward the production and sale of tourist views aimed at a curious and affluent clientele. Their work was recognized with awards at the World’s Fairs of 1889 and 1900. A beautiful tourist photo album containing 50 photographs that have been hand-colored with gouache.
